Andrew Townsend started the practice in 1987 following architectural education at Edinburgh University and collaborative work with the Scottish poet and landscape artist, Ian Hamilton Finlay. In 1985, Andrew was awarded the Lethaby Scholarship by the SPAB, giving him a unique opportunity to study building conservation projects and techniques at first hand in many different areas of the country. Andrew is consultant architect at Tewkesbury Abbey and Berkeley Castle as well as inspecting architect for over fifty parish churches. He is on the register of Architects Accredited in Building Conservation and was a member of the Gloucester Diocesan Advisory Committee. Andrew has a particular interest in working with historic landscapes and gardens including designing new structures for these settings. He is an enthusiastic follower of the SPAB philosophy of conservative repair and is closely involved with the SPAB’s educational programme.
