Arnold Root trained as an architect at Cambridge University and in 1981 was awarded the SPAB’s Lethaby Scholarship to learn how to repair buildings conservatively; he has remained steadfastly committed to SPAB's repair philosophy ever since.  Since qualifying, he worked as a grants architect in Edinburgh New Town, a conservation officer in Bath (for five years) and then at English Heritage for 22 years, advising on repair grants to a wide range of historic structures.  Arnold is an RIBA accredited conservation architect, and a member of the Bath Preservation Trust's Architecture and Planning Committee, the 20th Century Society and the National Trust.  He served as a member of Exeter Diocesan Advisory Committee and as a Trustee of Woodchester Mansion Trust.

We are sorry to announce that our friend and colleague Arnold died in late July after a long illness.
